Saturday football
In yesterday’s post (‘If the stars align’), CanningTownWA noted that all but one of the weekend’s games impact the relegation places. It’s not often that all the footballing stars do align to West Ham’s benefit, but there’s a good chance that most will today. Just three points separate the bottom six, so whatever happens could bring significant change. There’ll be much to discuss on Match of the Day this evening.

BOURNEMOUTH vs LIVERPOOL (1230)
Liverpool did their goal difference a world of good last week and will hope to add further to that in the early kick-off. The Cherries, now rock bottom on goal difference, will clutch at anything that fate may bring them. Which probably won’t be a lot. Away win.

EVERTON vs BRENTFORD (1500)
Everton have played a game more than those around them and don’t look quite as confident as they did when Sean Dyche took over. The Bees, on the other hand, are shining like the North Star with confidence gushing from every orifice. They’ll look to their visit to Goodison to climb into European territory. Things looking sticky for the Toffees. Away win.

LEEDS UNITED vs BRIGHTON & HOVE ALBION (1500)
Things ain’t looking too rosy for Leeds and Brighton as we know are no easy opposition. If the Seagulls can repeat last week’s result they’ll do us all a massive favour. Away win.

LEICESTER CITY vs CHELSEA (1500)
Three points for Chelsea last time out, a rare achievement that they’ll be very keen to build on. The Foxes’ season has experienced a sharp about turn after pulling themselves up from bottom spot some weeks ago. They’re back in the deep, dark mire, that’s for sure. Away win.

TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR vs NOTTINGHAM FOREST (1500)
Forest’s away form is abysmal. Long may that continue. Much talk about this game will inevitably focus on Antonio Conte, because the media do love a good dig. For today, let’s hope that Spurs canter to an expected victory. Home win.

CRYSTAL PALACE vs MANCHESTER CITY (1730)
Palace are probably safe, but they’re nowhere out of woods just yet. A couple of poor results may get the old sweat glands doing their stuff in Thornton Heath. City remain in touching distance of Arsenal and will be in no hurry to give that up. Away win.

*SUNDAY*

FULHAM vs ARSENAL (1400)
Fulham are nobody’s fools and cannot be taken lightly – not even by a side gunning for the title. It’ll be a tough game for Arsenal, but they’ve probably got the wherewithal to come away with all three points. Away win.

MANCHESTER UNITED vs SOUTHAMPTON (1400)
Man U did well to shake off their magnificent defeat to Liverpool with a midweek European win. Lucky for them they’ve got weak opponents today. Home win.

WEST HAM UNITED vs ASTON VILLA (1400)
Consistency lost plays consistency regained. That’s what a well-chosen new manager can do. Villa look to have done enough to ensure safety and under boss Emery will hope to add whatever further points may be on offer. As for us, we go into this on the back of a comprehensive league win followed by an equally comprehensive league defeat and a comfortable win by the warm waters of the Mediterranean. Where does that leave things in the approach to this game? Both stars and tea leaves will have to be aligned if we’re to grab all three points today. Draw.

NEWCASTLE UNITED vs WOLVERHAMPTON WANDERERS (1630)
A massive chance for the Barcodes to return to winning ways and use their game/s in hand to apply pressure on Liverpool and Spurs. Wolves have opened a healthy gap over the bottom three, but still have an eye over their shoulders and will be fortunate to get anything from the northeast. Home win.

*WEDNESDAY*

BRIGHTON & HOVE ALBION vs CRYSTAL PALACE (1930)
The A23 derby has the south coast club in pole position and there’s little to suggest that Palace will drive home with even one additional point in the bag. Home win.

SOUTHAMPTON vs BRENTFORD (1930)
The Saints are battling for every point. Points have been rather more forthcoming for Brentford and the visitors will start as firm favourites at St Mary’s. Away win.

*CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND-UP*

Burnley and Sheff U consolidated their places at the top of the Championship, while the gap between the bottom three – Wigan, Huddersfield and Blackpool – and Cardiff in 21st place widened by another point last week. Burnley host Wigan this afternoon. Top versus bottom; what could possibly go wrong? Millwall slipped out of the play-off places last week but will hope to return when they visit Reading this afternoon. One place behind them are Coventry, who remarkably were rock bottom just a couple of months ago. They host mid-table Hull today.

Re: Saturday football
I think Charlie, and others, have forgot about it..

You can see Moyes is now taking it one game at a time and seting targets for each game, seemed content enough with a point on Sunday. Def in a fight, but I still say we are likely to stay up based on having, on paper, the best side down there that will probably do enough to reach 37 points, almost always it's the 3 worst sides that go down, I can't remember the last time a 'good, or even decent side, went down, nobody think Leicester will go down for the same reason, but we have to beat Soton.

Re: Saturday football

Fair enough point. Personally, seeing us play and reading what a depressing mess the dressing room is, an amount of apathy has set in.
I did actually watch the Brighton game and was left impressed by them again. Brighton, Brentford & Fulham are clubs punching above their weight thanks to managers who understand the modern game.

Fwiw, palace played ok but are toothless in front of goal. Southampton, while they rightly changed managers, made a bad choice with Jones, and his run will see them drop.
I still see us in a fight for avoiding 18th and we have to do ourselves a favour.
Btw, have we a game tonight?

Re: Saturday football
In the last 3 big home games we have beat Everton and Forest and drew with Villa, so I don't see the Soton game being any different.

But yea don't get me wrong it can still go horribly wrong, but also think having players back will help too.

I really hope you're right.

It's so damn tight down there. We're three points from 12th spot. And three points from bottom. With a game in hand over Southampton (2 points behind us) and Everton (1 point ahead) and Wolves and Palace (both 3 points ahead).

The Southampon game is massive.

Sydney_Iron 5:21 Thu Mar 16
Re: Saturday football
Southampton and Palace both lose overnight, only 5 points between the bottom 8 clubs then an 8 point gap to 11th.

Going to be very tight as to who goes down IMO Usually by now we have at least 1 if not 2 basket cases almost doomed to drop but this season its as close as i can ever remember.

I just hope we survive; 12th now would be like getting top 6.

Re: Saturday football
So the SHIT at the bottom lose as usual and nobody says anything? If they had won this thread would be on fire with mass negativity.

We will beat Southampton, and probably comfortably.

Based on every teams last performance we are the worst team in the league right now

Re: Saturday football
It sure what to make of all the optimism about todays results. Have you seen how fucking shit and disinterested we are ffs.

Last weeks performance was as bad as it gets.

Fuck the bullshit midweek result against the pub side we are in trouble, 3-0 Villa win tomorrow. We’ll be lucky to have a shot on target…… Again!

Palace 0 shots on target in their last 3 matches, Moyes would be proud

Re: Saturday football
What are you talking about? Surely the two teams we really didn't want to get a win today were Bournemouth and Everton.

Leicester getting dragged back down into it is a bonus, our game with them could be a decider. Moyes actually has a surprisingly decent record against Leicester under Rodgers though. One of the few.

Come On You Irons 9:33 Sat Mar 11
Re: Saturday football
A pretty good day for us, all things considered.

Leicester, Forest and Palace all lose to get dragged further into the mix. Leeds fail to win and Everton and Bournemouth only improve their goal differences by one goal.

We are net positive from ANY win tomorrow. Even a draw tomorrow leaves us net neutral vis-a-via Leeds and net positive vis-a-vis Leicester, Forest and Palace.

Re: Saturday football
We beat Villa and Soton and we'll remain in the hunt,. We have to win both.

We have to turn up in games though. We just didnt against Brighton and its inexcusable given what's on the line. It ought to really go off tomorrow if we play like we did last week.

Your undying support of Moyes is one of the most tragic things I've ever seen on here. You should probably top yourself too.

It will be interesting to see what Dyche does with Everton, whether they become a Scouse version of Burnley or he adopts a more expansive game with better players.
